For Clinicians

As a physician working with the geriatric population, you understand as each of us age we don’t metabolize medications as quickly or tolerate the side effects. So dosing sometimes can be a challenge.

Pharmacogenetics is a well-established discipline of pharmacology.  It can help make medicines safer and more effective by genotype-based individualized therapy rather than prescribing by the traditional ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach.

Currently, over 100 medications include pharmacogenetic information on the drug label. Pharmacogenetic testing can improve the likelihood of a beneficial outcome in terms of safety and/or efficacy.  It can also help reduce the time required to identify the correct drug and its dose and minimize exposure to potentially ineffective medicines.

The PGx Medical proprietary program provides evidence-based reports to more accurately assess how a patient’s body metabolizes medications and allows you to adjust dosages and avoid prescribing medications that may not even have the capability to be effective.

It is another piece of the puzzle that gives you precise information to help lead to better outcomes for your patients.

For Pharmacists

Pharmacists are well positioned to play a role in implementing pharmacogenetic information.  They understand better then anyone the importance of proper prescribing and the risks involved if a patient is on medications their body doesn’t metabolize properly.

Pharmacist can include pharmacogenetic information in medication therapy management (MTM) programs and areas that commonly use medications affected by pharmacogenetic variations, such as, but not limited to,  pain or psychiatry.

As part of the PGx Medical exclusive program, a pharmacist canidentify at-risk patients, work with their physicians to manage test results, and offer ongoing medication therapy management services afterwards. The consultant pharmacist can also decipher pharmacogenetic test results to determine whether patients have the proper enzymes to metabolize their medications.

PGx Medical has been working with pharmacists since 2010 to provide these services under a Medicare-reimbursement model in the field of aging services.

Our PGx report aligns current and future medications with each patient’s unique genetic profile, and then seamlessly integrates the pharmacogenetic information into the consultant pharmacist’s workflow.   It makes sense to entrust a pharmacist to analyze the absorption, distribution and metabolism of medications through a patients’ pharmacogenetic report.

As more pharmacists begin offering pharmacogenetic testing as part of their normal operations, personalized medicine will become more prevalent.
