Personalized medicine via pharmacogenomic testing has been around for more than 15 years. Just recently, though, it has come to the forefront of the health-care industry, and PGx Medical is helping in the effort to determine what medicines will work most effectively for individuals.

“Most people aren’t aware the test is even available,” said Bullard. “But perhaps more importantly, people are unaware that Medicare Part B covers 100 percent of the test at no out-of-pocket expense to the patient.”

Medicare estimates 1 billion prescriptions will be written this year. Studies show 65 percent of doctor visits result in a prescription. “If ineffective medications continue to be prescribed, we as a nation will continue to throw our money away on medications that are ineffective,” said Bullard.

The PGx Medical test is a simple swab of the cheek. The test is done on a doctor’s order, and results are available 48 hours after the PGx lab receives the sample. Physicians maintain the test results, so they can monitor and prescribe medicine appropriately, depending on their patient’s metabolic results.
